Tour Description: This will be an easy day atop the look out. As well as binoculars, bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and a folding chair or cushion to sit upon.

On a good day in September, hundreds of raptors might be seen passing through. Most will be Broad-winged Hawks (in some years more than 3,000 have been seen at one time), but smaller numbers in the hundreds are far more likely. Other species also occur, including Osprey, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, American Kestrel, Turkey Vulture and Black Vulture. Even Peregrine Falcon is possible as several pairs breed in the North Carolina Mountains and others pass through our area. We will spend the day at the overlook, viewing and learning about birds of prey.

Directions to the Mt. Pisgah Hawk Watch site The watch site at the "Mills River Valley Overlook" is located between mile posts 404 and 405. Best views are from the southern end of the parking area, and no hiking is required. If you are traveling from Asheville, NC, turn south on the Blue Ridge Parkway and drive approximately 10 miles beyond the Parkway's junction with NC 191 If you are traveling from Brevard, NC or Waynesville, NC, take US 276 to the Parkway. Turn north on the Parkway and drive approximately eight miles.
