Register by clicking the ‘book now’ button above, or by contacting the Ventures office. We accept credit cards for an additional fee (2.9% for MC, Visa, Discover; 3.9% for AmEx), but you may also pay by bank transfer, cash, check, or money order. This Venture is limited to 10 participants.

Departure: We will meet at the Carver’s Gap parking lot (approximately 36.10642, -82.11094). From Hwy 19E in Tennessee, turn onto Roan Rd/SR-143. Stay on this road until reaching Carver’s Gap, which is marked by a sign bearing its name. From North Carolina, Hwy 261 summits the mountain from the opposite direction. Time: 7:45 AM – 2:00 PM (end time flexible) Price: $60

This Venture will take a different approach to previous trips to one of Tennessee’s most beautiful state parks – Roan Mountain. In case you missed Clifton Avery’s trip in June (or you loved it and want to come back!), join me at Carver’s Gap to enjoy a morning of casual birding in the unique spruce-fir forest and grassy bald habitats of Southern Appalachia. We will expect to see high-elevation specialists like Alder Flycatcher, Veery, Red Crossbill, Pine Siskin, and more! Experience the amazing natural history of the region for yourself as we look for the endemic Gray’s Lily, special salamanders, and lingering rhododendron blossoms in the world’s largest natural rhododendron garden.

After searching for birds, other wildlife, and scenic mountain vistas, we will head towards a quiet, forested shelter to begin the second portion of the trip. We will use watercolors, glue, and natural elements for a relaxing session of creative art. No prior art skills are needed. All styles are welcome – finger painting, stick figures, abstract, realistic, you name it!

The initial hike at Carver’s Gap is approximately one mile to the farthest point. Bring water and comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for incline. Pack snacks and a lunch for the remainder of the trip. Art materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Picnic areas and restrooms are available.
