Venture to Peru (Amazon Rain Forest)
The Amazon basin is the largest river system in the world. At any one time, at least 20% of all the fresh water in the world flows through it. Our Amazon venture will allow us to experience the majesty of this legendary river as well as the beauty of the surrounding tropical rain forest. Our journey begins in the port of Iquitos, Peru, where we board our boat for the trip down river to our rain forest destination. At the Explorama Lodge, the Explornapo Lodge, and the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research (ACEER), we will enjoy comfortable but basic accommodations (clean outdoor toilets, solar-heated showers), delicious food and drink, and close proximity to the rain forest and all its wildlife. Electricity does not intrude on the naturalness of the setting; in the evening, kerosene lanterns light the palm-thatched walkways and rooms, creating a warm and tropical ambiance. We will live much as the riberenos (river people) do. On waterways and trails, and from the canopy at ACEER, we will see monkeys, sloths, frogs, butterflies, insects, orchids, bromeliads, and birds everywhere -- all just a few hours from Miami.
