Birding the Green River Gamelands

Kentucky Warbler by Simon Thompson

Our day began near the top of Green River Cove Road, where we stopped at a few of the many pullouts. Worm-eating, Black-throated Green, Black-and-white, and Yellow-rumped Warblers were singing as well as both Blue-headed and Yellow-throated Vireos. Down at the Fish Top parking area we had Louisiana Waterthrush, Northern Parula, Yellow-throated Warbler, and we enjoyed watching a pair of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers constructing a nest. One of our next stops was the ‘Redstart Rest Stop.’ Living up to its name, we found several male American Redstarts here during our bathroom break. We decided next to check the Walcott Tract for Swainson’s & Kentucky Warblers. It must have been a few days too early as the birds were not back here yet, although we did get great looks of a Kentucky Warbler later in the morning right along Green River Cove Road. We found Prairie Warblers in their usual spot along with White-eyed Vireos, and had a few flyover Broad-winged Hawks along the way. We ended our tour shortly after lunch at Lake Adger, where we encountered the now expected Fish Crow along with Wood Duck, Barn, Tree and Northern Rough-winged Swallows, and a few migrant Palm Warblers. We finished up with 56 species – not a bad tally for an early spring day!
