Venture to Ridge Junction Overlook,
Mt. Mitchell, NC
September 26, 2012
Ten of us met at Ridge Junction Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a great Ventures Tour. We had a beautiful sunrise to start things off.
A few minutes after sunrise we started seeing birds fly over. Many did not stop at first, but soon they started stopping for short rest. We noticed the best action was just around the corner along Hwy 128, so we all gathered there and watch a show for about an hour and half.
Wave after wave of migrants poured over the gap.
Some stopping and others just fly on by. Best birds of the morning included Philadelphia Vireo, Blue-winged Warbler, Peregrine Falcon, and more Rose-breasted Grosbeaks than you could shake a stick at. After the action slowed down at the overlook, we decided to head up to Stepps Gap and walk a little ways down the Commissary Trail. We were rewarded with a Ruffed Grouse which was a life bird for several folks in the group. After a great lunch near the top of Mt Mitchell, we decided to walk up to the very top of the mountain where we got great looks at a Merlin chasing butterflies around the trees. That ended a great day of birding!
